“Our task is to provide an education to the kind of kids we have… Not the kind of kids we use to have… Or what we want to have…Or the kind of kids that exist in our dreams”. ---Mary Kay
Dear Parents and Community,
Students in 5th and 8th grade have begun the M-Step. Grades 3rd – 7th will test in the month of May. The following are suggestions to help your child succeed.
Practicing for M-Step
Many practice sites are available for M-Step practice. Teacher’s have exposed students to the Michigan M-Step website practice samples. To help your students you may visit the Michigan Department of Education’s Online Practice for M-STEP English language arts, mathematics, science and social studies at

Make sure your child gets a good night's sleep and eats a healthy breakfast
Many teachers report that students who don't do well on tests haven't gotten enough sleep, and haven't eaten breakfast on the morning of the test. Doing both of these things will ensure that your child is working at full capacity (Narang, 2008).
Make sure your child is prepared
Practice sites are available on-line for typing skills as well as sample test items. Please review them with your child to ease his/her frame of mind. Having students come to school on time is a necessity to ease the pressure of test taking. Each grade level has specific dates allotted by the state for completion of the test. If a student misses a day, they may have to double up a test on the same day which makes students feel anxiety. If your child is sick on test day, please call the school so we can make the proper adjustments in their testing schedule.
Remain positive
Staying calm will help your child stay calm. If he/she gets nervous about the test or is likely to experience anxiety during the test, help her practice some relaxation techniques that he/she can try once she's taking the test (Narang, 2008).
